10) Return to Me (2000)
After an accident involving a married man’s wife, a woman is given her heart so that she can survive. Months later the two meet, and experience love at first sight. The two slowly begin a relationship as Grace, played by Minnie Driver, eventually realizes their connection through her new heart. Although the plot is simple, and slightly clichéd, this film is warm and a good way to spend a date night.
9) Amelie (2001)
After an odd childhood that left Amelie with little to do but dream of love and beauty in her own dreams, she moves to the center of Paris where she works as a waitress. One day she finds an old box and decides to return it to its owner. In doing so, Amelie discovers her calling: making others happy. She decides to do what she can to please others, but finds that if she wants the love she dreamed of as a young girl she needs to start pleasing herself, not just those around her.
8) The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
Not the best film ever, but as far as romantic films go, it works. Steve McQueen plays a bank robber, while Faye Dunaway plays the insurance investigator after him. The two play a game of cat and mouse that eventually ends with passion and romance. If you aren’t sure how to seduce a member of the opposite sex, I suggest you watch this film; hopefully by the end of the night you’ll have some ideas.
7) When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Love is a tricky thing, and nothing is more certain in 1989’s “When Harry Met Sally.” Twelve years is a long time to wait to fall in love, unless of course you never saw it coming, which is the case for Harry and Sally. Unfortunately we, as the audience, don’t have that pleasure as we are always one-step ahead of this pair. After years of bumping into each other the two characters finally fall in love. Hopefully your night won’t take as long…
6) Atonement (2007)
This movie is the newest on the list, and possibly one of the best overall films. This film takes you on an emotional rollercoaster as you follow the lives of Robie Taylor and Cecilia Turner. Their love for each other blossoms as an unfortunate string of events pulls them apart. The on screen chemistry between Keira Knightley and James McAvoy makes this film the perfect Valentine’s Day movie; unfortunately you will have to share the experience with others as this film is only currently playing in theatres.
Editor's Note: Hey, a tug job is a tug job.
5) Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
This film is all about anticipation and hope. It’s the film version of a kiss that never seems to happen, even though you know it’s coming. Sam and Annie, played by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, are destined to be together but there are obstacles in the way: such as a few hundred miles and the fact that they’ve never met. Nevertheless, this film finds a way to pull these two romantic souls together and in the meantime pulls at your heartstrings every second of the way.
4) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
This is by far the most challenging movie to follow on this list, but perhaps one of the most rewarding and beautiful messages of any date movie. This film makes Charlie Kaufman’s earlier works seem simple- a challenging feat. In the end, the message is simple, however. As humans we have a need for love and we’ll do anything to find it, but if we’re lucky enough to have it find us, then there is no way to turn your back on it. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet lead an all-star cast as Kaufman bends time, perception, and “normalcy” for an amazing film that proves just how important our memories truly are.
3) Titanic (1997)
Love, adversity, death, drama- this late 90s instant-classic had it all. It marked Leonardo Dicaprio’s coming out party, and Kate Winslet’s… well, technically it was her coming out party too although in a much different way. This film recounts the story of a young woman stuck between choosing love or choosing wealth and a future of certainty. "Titanic" is a movie that both men and women can enjoy, but just remember not to be too excited when Winslet takes her clothes off!
2) The Notebook (2004)
"The Notebook" is a heart-wrenching story of a man that reads everyday to his wife from a notebook that tells the story of how they fell in love. He does this because they are now in the twilight of their lives, and she has Alzheimer’s. So every day he tells her their story, and once in a while he’s rewarded with her remembering the beautiful moments just as he recounts them. As if this storyline wasn’t enough, we get the opportunity to see how they fell in love first hand through the stories. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams shine in their respective roles, making this a first-class film all-around.
1) Casablanca (1942)
Is it cliché to put “Casablanca” as the number 1 movie on this list? Possibly, but if you watch this movie multiple times, as I have, you’ll understand just why it had to be at the top spot. “Casablanca” is the story of two people in love who have to make the decision to give it all up for a cause that they believe to be bigger than themselves. Although this movie is over 50 years old, its ability to entertain will never diminish. It’s an American classic that I hope you can enjoy.
If you waited too long to pick up the movies on the list, don’t sweat, I’ve got a few more picks up my sleeve. Here are a few other movies that just might hit the spot:
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
There’s Something About Mary (1998)
Last Kiss (2002)
Moonstruck (1987)
